Many times, family historians have tried to find out where great granny was buried.
We knew the date and place of death but not where they were buried.
Where could they be?
What cemeteries were in the area at that time?
Where are the burial records held ?
I, personally, was fed up phoning one person or another trying to find the records only to be told that none had survived, they were destroyed by a fire in the gravedigger's hut etc.
With that in mind the SAFHS Graveyard Working Group, with the help of most of the Scottish family history societies, began to collate as much information as we could about the places of burial in Scotland.
Since then we have collated information from over 3,500 cemeteries, burial places, crematoria and even individual graves.
The information on each burial ground varies due to the information being given by so many different people.
The lack either of information available or, on occasion, the local authority's unwillingness to help has also made it difficult to show exactly the same type of information for every site.
The fields on the CD include:
- County
- Registration District Number (Parish Number)
- Name of burial ground
- Alternative name of burial ground
- Location
- Ordnance Survey reference number
- When it was opened
- When it was closed
- Where burial records are held
- What period these records cover
- If there are published monumental inscriptions (gravestone inscriptions) and if so where these can be obtained
- If there are unpublished monumental inscriptions and if so where these can be accessed
- Notes (This can include snippets like, for example, the cemetery being closed except for the unmarried daughters of lair owners.)
There are also many other fields.
There are no names of individuals mentioned and there are no monumental inscriptions (gravestone inscriptions) on the CD.
